Friendly Advice.

What you need
is just to want less.

Obviously, you can't need less.
But if you can stop wanting what you need,

that's a start.

Love will make you feel small.
(Smaller than usual).

Waking up alone isn't so bad.

I know it's unsettling to lose your ability
to look down on everyone else,

but that's what kindness is.

Whoever told you that adulthood meant
paying your bills, buying your own groceries, or feeding the fucking cat,

was wrong.

Adulthood is delaying gratification indefinitely,
and doing what is right in defiance of what is interesting.

So if you've been opening and shutting the car door
on your thumb in a dream every night: just stop.

If you've been befriending stringy-haired squatters,
in the hopes that they'll agree to crawl across the Brooklyn Bridge with you: just stop.

Cut your own hair,
that way you can call yourself both Samson and Delilah.

Be helpful,
and use your slender fingers to plug the ears of strangers.

Hold their hands,
but don't ever ask their names.
